One of the huge benefits of having a home generator is not being totally dependent on a utility company. While you may not want to run your generator full time due to the utility company supplying electricity cheaper than you can generate it, it helps when power lines go down, such as during severe storms at any time of year. Depending on the size of generator you have, you may have to ration power between various users until the main power comes back on, but it can keep you from freezing to death or starving.
