Over the past few months there have been a number of online discussions regarding nofollow versus dofollow blogs.
Once you understand what a dofollow blog is, I think you will agree that setting your blog to dofollow is the best way to go in this new online social networking world.
What are NoFollow and DoFollow Blogs?
“Dofollow” is the opposite of “NoFollow”. Wordpress blogs, by default, use the HTML nofollow attribute on links that point away from the blog. This nofollow attribute comes into play with the posting of blog comments. The nofollow HTML tag tells the search engines NOT to follow the link to any other web sites.
There two major reasons why Wordpress sets it’s comment links to nofollow. 1. It’s good SEO for the blog since there will be fewer outgoing links and therefore less “link bleed”, leading to better Google page rank. Sounds good! 2. There are blog spammers out there who will, and have, posted blog spam comments solely for the benefit of getting more incoming links to their site, which helps page rank.
Using nofollow discourages those junk comment posts since there is no SEO to be gained by them. That makes sense! So why are DoFollow blog owners going against the norm by turning the NoFollow tag off, and enabling dofollow on out going comment links?
Why DoFollow Blogs?
If you’re like most bloggers, you want people to comment on your blog posts. You want more of an interactive community. That’s what Web 2.0 is about – community, relationships, and user created content. But, how do you encourage people to comment on your blog posts? You give them something in return. You give them an outgoing link to their website, when they make a quality comment on your blog. You also allow the search engine to follow that link to their website by using the dofollow attribute. It’s really a win-win situation. You get user created content on your blog, your visitors who leave appropriate comments get a link to their website.
Okay, but what about comment spammers?
No doubt there will be spammers who try to take advantage of your generosity. If you have a blog, you are probably already getting comment spam. You have probably already installed a spam comment plugin like Askimet or Spam Karma. These spam comment plugins do a very good job of identifying spam comments. You will still need to monitor comments, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes each day.
How Do I Set My Wordpress Blog to DoFollow?
Once you see the benefit of setting your blog to dofollow, how do you actually turn the nofollow tag off in Wordpress? Unfortunately, the option to turn NoFollow on, or off, is not an option in Wordpress. You will need a Wordpress plugin to remove the nofollow attribute in post comments. Just do a Google search for “Wordpress DoFollow plugin” to find a list of DoFollow plugins. I’m sure the discussion of NoFollow versus Dofollow Blogs will continue, but with the current Wordpress blog comment spam plugins now available, I see no reason not to be a “Do-Follow” blogger.
